North towards Memus and the glens

This is the best side for walkers. You're closest to the hills with quieter roads to match, though the downside is a longer drive for a big food shop, so stock up in Kirriemuir or Forfar on the way in and you won't need to leave again until you fancy a change of scene.

West around Lintrathen

Bigger parties do well here. The barn conversions sit handy for the Isla valley, Reekie Linn and the Loch of Lintrathen. Kirriemuir is still close enough for a meal out.

Forfar's shops are nearer on this side and Aberlemno is known for its carved Pictish stones, but it's a longer run to the head of the glens.

South towards Newtyle

Newtyle is the pick if a day in Dundee matters as much as a day on the hills. Expect a longer drive up to the glens. It suits a mixed break best.

Angus is easy to get around by car for a Scotland holiday. These are rough drive times from the middle of the town, so allow a little extra on single-track roads.

The glens and the best things nearby
