It is. That's the real draw. Forfar sits close to the middle of the county, so nearby attractions are easy to see and nothing is a long drive. These times come from the centre of Forfar, so add a few minutes from your own cottage.

Priory, stones and castle

Start close by. Restenneth Priory is a ruined priory just outside Forfar, a quiet first stop that's only 3 minutes from the centre. You can walk around the ruins but not inside the surviving buildings, so bring sturdy shoes.

A few minutes further, the Pictish carved stones at Aberlemno are worth the detour and free to visit. Timber covers protect them from frost from the end of September until early April, so come in summer if you want to see the carving. One of the roadside slabs has also gone to Edinburgh for conservation after it fell in a storm, so check the Historic Environment Scotland page before you go.

Then there's Glamis Castle, an easy afternoon out. It opens fewer days late in the year before a winter break, so check its site first. The area's attractions sit close together, so you could see all three in a day. For a restaurant meal or a wider choice of shops, Dundee is 20 minutes from the centre of Forfar.

Coast, Glens or Both?

By the sea

Heading for the hills
